HOW I MET Your Mother fans were left reeling when their beloved series came to a controversial end last Monday night.

SPOILER ALERT: Seriously, if you haven’t heard how he actually met the mother by now you shouldn’t even be here.

Some were delighted to see leading man Ted Mosby reunite with old flame Robin after his wife’s death, but others were positively fuming.

So fuming, in fact, that they started a Change.org petition to have the ending re-written and shot all over again. Which they intend to submit to CBS. For real.

One fan argued that creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas had “ruined nine years of character development in 40 minutes”, while others said the fans quite simply deserved a better ending.

Around 17,000 signatures later, it seems the powers that be are taking note because Carter Bays has revealed that there is actually an alternative ending.

In a series of tweets he said:

16 days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings. We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series. We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too.

And now for the most important part.
